We started HB Design Build in 2016, after Hurricane Matthew tore through Hilton Head Island. We've each lived here for more than 25 years, and the company is still run by the two of us.
That means the people you meet at the first walkthrough are the people responsible for the finished house. Howard brings a career in custom building, and Barry brings a background in banking, technology and property management. Our cabinet company, bspök, means the millwork is ours too.
Principal
Barry spent the first part of his career in banking and finance. After earning a finance degree from James Madison University, he worked in commercial lending and real estate asset management, then became a senior vice president at SunTrust Bank in Richmond, Virginia, leading the small business sales team and eight branch offices. He went on to serve as chief operating officer of a Richmond software company.
On Hilton Head, he founded and ran his own property management company before starting HB Design Build with Howard in 2016. He also holds a real estate sales license.
Principal
Howard has been a residential builder since 1990, first in Vail, Colorado, and on Hilton Head since 1999. He has built everything from remodels to new custom homes of more than 15,000 square feet, and he developed and built out the Bryant Park subdivision on the island.
Much of his career has focused on energy-efficient, healthy homes. He is a RESNET HERS energy rater, BPI Building Analyst and NAHB Green Building Verifier, co-founded Coastal Green Building Solutions, and founded and chaired the Hilton Head Area Council for Green Building. His homes earned a 2009 Gold Energy Value Housing Award from the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Association of Home Builders, and he served on the executive board of the Hilton Head Area Home Builders Association.
We're at the house while the work happens. You deal with the owners of the company, not a rotating cast of project managers.
